Good Values!
Tanay started with Pre-K Dinosaurs today, Here is the letter I got from his cubby file on his first day. I really liked this idea of a way of cultivating good values in his school which will be measured daily. Responsibility! it is such a big word for those tiny ones. But its good to start sowing seeds sooner than later. Read on:

Halloween
Finally it was friday and Tanay could wear his spider-man costume he was eagerly waiting for.
When we reached the school, the kids had already lined up for parade and they were circling the school campus. It was amazing to find so many spider-man's and a spider-woman in that age group. That did'nt let any of Tanay's excitement go down.
Later they had the usual Halloween party in the afternoon. Tanay was happy on sugar the entire friday evening.
Then same day Tanay's Chikamma: Deepti called and let us know that there is an event scheduled in the Borders book store for kids where they would have the Halloween story telling. So, all of us got ready as fast as we could for a Saturday morning and headed for the Halloween activity.
It was a hurry for a weekend but worth it, since it was a lot of fun for Tanay: The picture coloring, pumpkin throw, story telling and finally the parade. During the parade Tanay was more interested in Toys rather than in the parade itself. Tanay and his cousin Vedant hardly played together that day, may be each one was not able to recognize other. Vedant was 'little red devil' very cute with wings! I wish I could capture them together. Some other day... Any day the kids get dressed up, its Halloween for parents :)
Then, today Tanay and I went out for trick or treat door to door in the community. At every house after he got a candy, I asked him what do you say now, He would blurt out 'Trick or Treat' and I would remind him, what to say after the treat is already in the bag...
Thank you!
Signing off,
Mother to Tanay!

Scary Vs Pretty
Almost every morning Tanay has been waking up to ask "Is it Halloween yet?" And Every time that question when answered there is a disappointment that shows up on his face. I have been managing to keep him cheered up for the rest of the day and make him wait for Halloween.
The conversations on Halloween have become inevitable every day, with so much media focus on celebrations, decorations in every alternate house; especially ever since he has his new possession of Spider-man costume.
So it was last night:
He asked "Can I become a ghost for Halloween?"
I said "No" and reminded him that he already has his spider-man super-hero costume.
He said "Ghosts are not scary right? Its just a thing in Halloween time."
I wondered, may be its the school and his friends talking about Halloween and so the question.
Well, the next question was: "What are you gonna be Mommy?"
I said "mmmm May be a witch!".
He made an angry face and weird expression of bad face and said "No, you cant be a witch, it's a bad one" He commanded "You should be a princess!"
I asked "why, why cant I be a witch?"
He said "Because you are a girl and girls become princess for Halloween"
I smiled and I thought, I wish I was a 'little girl' who could dress pretty princess and flaunt cute for tick or treat!

Getting geared!
The full moon night after Dussera is the night that marks a beginning of other half of the year with cooler temperatures. Kojagiri, is the name of the festival. Saturday being a very relaxed day, we decided to celebrate it on that night. Then, today of course was the day for my preparedness in the house for winter and clean up for Diwali. All the hangers in the closet were disrobed of the summer bright colors and eventually donned a cozier attire. Those wools were out from the darkness and into the sunshine, and they lay happily basking in the sun.

My Pumpkin turned 4!
Happy birthday Tanay! |
Come October and holiday season is here.
Most importantly in our family it is October and it is the month when my Dear son decided to make a grand entrance to arena - life!
This year Esh and I both decided to embrace the season and bring in the fall season theme into the bday celebrations. So we all went apple picking!
I cant believe that its been 4 years already into motherhood. However old the baby grows up, but he is always a baby to his mother.
Tanay?
He enjoys being a big boy. He loves to declare that he is not a baby anymore. He understands his independence and wants to do things in his own way, which is good but definitely we parents would be guiding him wade through his ways.
Happy birthday to you dear son!
There were few games that were themed around apple. |
All the kids loved the pumpkin painting we had organized. |
The color of the theme was red and green. |

Cheshire cat and bunny
It was my first day of work as an employee at the same place where I have been working for past 2 years and I had to hurry that morning. I told Tanay, we dont have time today and we got to hurry. Still having his eyes closed, Tanay said "I will only wake up if the bunny wakes me up". So the bunny hopped on him from the chest on his bedside and said "Wake up Tanay, and dont make mommy scream". (It was me who was telling things to him impostered as bunny). To my surprise, he did not add even a minute worth of delay in leaving the house when getting ready.
Take a walk
It was a busy day and we all came back home really really tired after our routine schedule of work-school. Tanay had few pieces of fruit and yogurt for his evening snack and started playing in his room. He walked out with his toys, placed them in a pattern in the hallway and went back inside. He got few more and went back to fetch more. This pattern continued until he had all his companions sitting outside waiting to obey his command. To us parents, it just looked like a floor with scattered toys all over. Indeed, there was hardly any place to walk to get to the otherside of the house. Being tired of starting early in the day and cleaning up the toys and clothes the same morning, I told him to clean up the toys as someone might get hurt by stepping on it mistakenly. His answer was "See there is so much space, I will show you how to walk" See, First keep you leg here and then here and then here. See I aldeary (already) crossed and not stepped on anything. See. I will show you again.....

Facelift
Our house in bangalore is getting some facelift - new light fixtures, new curtains, and a new paint. Nana has been communicating regarding the paint color. Choosing a color for the house can really be a difficult task. Especially when we have to consider all the various aspects of furniture, lighting, different colors of the things in house which are to be coordinated to make it a beautiful home. Cross the fingers to have it all come out well.

Wet attitude
As most of us keep postponing to take shower/bath to later time, Tanay has been no exception. And since he has his rule defined already that if he is not going out anywhere then he need not get in the bath. Of course once he is in tub filled with water and his toys, it is difficult to take him out. Those toys in water become alive and talk to him. The large bottles of shampoo and shower gel become mountain and the toy animals like to go swimming around the mountains.
He loves water, guess majority kids do. Not bothered about getting wet, not bothered about the mess. In their little world everything is perfect. No worries.
Looking at his water love and my expectation as a mother made me decide to enroll him in swimming lessons.
It was a cloudy and rainy and rainy day.
It was our first class. For this season, it was the first sight of pool for us. And looking at it, the first thing Tanay said is: 'Mommy its very deep'. Fear of depth of the 'deep' ocean was probably built by us parents and school. The fear was based on few books that were read to him umpteen times. The child's imaginations can go wild.
He sat on those steps where water could make only his tummy wet. He wanted me to get in water but I was not prepared as the class for 3-4 years old would not let the parents in the pool. I realized later that as first timer being with parent helps. He sat on those steps the entire class time and did not budge. Ms Tiffany, his teacher coaxed him every time it was his turn. The class got over and we got home. My entire drive back home was frustrating and I was sad. The frustration of things not turning out the way we want. I understood, he is just a child and if I was in his place I probably would have done the same thing. I did not say a word to him. I told myself to take it cool and that we can try next time. That whole day my thoughts kept coming back to uneventful swim session of the morning. Only fact I could think about was that I wasn't there with him in the pool and he did not go with Ms Tiffany. The real fact was he did not know Ms Tiffany, a complete stranger Tanay saw for the first time and so he did not trust her as much.
Later that evening sun was out and skies had cleared.
I asked him, do you want to go in pool with mommy, his eyes were full of excitement and he cried 'Yes'. His morning swim pants and rashguard were not dry yet. I looked for his old 2T swim clothes and tried. They were little snug but they fit. While it took sometime for me to get ready; I asked him to pack few of his toys and put it in his backpack. Then we drove less than a minute to get to our pool.
He repeated what he said in the morning: 'Its too deep Mommy, but mommy be there to help me'? 'Yes' - I answered. He first threw his duckies in water. Then we got in water - one step at a time and he clinged to me for a minute. Then he held the noodle and I held him by my side and made him float on water. I walked around in the pool two rounds with him floating by my side. He had enjoyed the ride. Then I asked him to hold the noodle tight and let him know that I am going to turn and be on his front. After he agreed and did what I told him I swung. Now him and I were facing each other and holding the noodle. He kicked and splashed. I asked him if is he having fun and I got an affirmative response.

Our outer extension
When the older one stays busy, the little one always keeps me busy. Then I decided to turn the table with the little one and keep him busy and give him an opportunity to get applauded for an accomplishment. One such task to be completed was to give a complete makeover to that little corner of our house.
The plants we owned needed care and a new company of the colored ones. So on a saturday morning after breakfast the little boy and me went shopping to get the kit and kaboodle for that makover.
We stretched a shower curtain on the planked patio floor and emptied two bags of 16 quarts potting mix. That little one had fun packing the dirt in empty pots before he got tired in sweltering summer heat. Then I sent him inside to breathe in air-conditioned air and relax in front of TV. I managed to complete 3 quarters of the work after that. Drilled into the pole for hanging coco baskets the next day and hung them up. Cleaned the dirt off the patio before sonny dear decided to roll in the crumbs of drying potting mix.
Since then, the little one and me have been enjoying watering them and talking to them every evening after coming back from school.

Curious box of rules unwrapped!
Too many questions, assumptions. Too many theorems applied. One such:
8:00 AM sunday morning.
Mommy: Lets go take bath Tanay.
Tanay: Where are we going today? You said no school.
Mommy: Nowhere, we are just staying home.
Tanay: Then why should I take bath?
Mommy: We have to take bath even if we are not going anywhere.
Pretty affirmative Tanay: But I take bath only if I go somewhere (pls read:thumwere).

In the blue hour
Summer 2005, one of first few days of NJ summer: It was a beautiful twilight when Esh and I walked along the Millstone river on a lightly paved road. A warm summer evening had a sweet smell of white blossoms from somewhere. We were talking about our past and a promising future that we were weaving towards - strand by strand. When dusk turned to a twilight we witnessed one of the most beautiful sights we ever saw, thousands of light bugs glittering around us in the velvety grass, It was as if the sky had showered all the stars around us. The weeping willow ahead of us got an angelic glow from twinkling fireflies and made it mysterious. We were in awe. It was a living dream.
Summer 2010, tonight: It was the similar bright twilight; Tanay and I took a short walk in the neighborhood; the purpose was recycling, unwinding and Esh getting his time. Tanay noticed a firefly and then another and then many - around the grass and daffodils, He had the same awe in his eyes. We talked about it and I told him; it is called 'jugnu' in Hindi. It seemed so magical and heavenly. Again.
It seems almost miraculous how those few moments which stay with us forever and comes back to us like a flashback. Just like that juncture in time that Esh and I spent watching fireflies by the weeping willow , the few moments that Tanay and I shared watching 'jugnus' will stay with me forever.

Little chef
Tanay: What do you want to eat Mommy?
Mommy: I would love some soup!
Tanay: Do you want broccoli, carrot, corn and onion in the soup?
Mommy: Sure - can you also add the tomato?
Tanay: okay
-----sometime here-----
Mommy: Yumm!
Tanay: Do you want some more?
Mommy: No my tummy is full! (showing a leveling hand on the chest)
Tanay: You should eat more, veggies are healthy!
Approximately 40 seconds of wait to cut all the play veggies
Around 10 seconds for Tanay to go the kitchen, and to open the drawer to fetch for real bowl.
2 seconds to pour all the cut veggies sans liquid..and Voila the soup is served!
My little's chef-play: timeless!

Wounds
DS Tanay fell down and got his knees scraped for the first time ever. The only way to calm him down was to tell the stories of mommy and papa when they were little. So I told him that they fell down too and sure it was ok. That wounds heal if we help them a little like putting Band-aid or putting neosporin. (Ofcourse when mommy and papa were as young as Tanay they never had Band-aid or neosporin but had Dettol/Burnol + cotton ball and sticky tape). Then I told him that little mommy and little papa were back running. And that's the way to grow up. That's the way to get stronger. He agreed and calmed down. He was excited and was showing his muscles as if the wounds on his knees made the muscles on his arms grow! :)
While I was telling the stories to him I re-learnt this: Wounds are inevitable but if we help them heal fast that's the way to live and grow stronger. My ds is my teacher now.

22 in 10: bittersweet birthday
Esh did not recover fully from his illness. An excruciating headache and buzzing sound in his ear is what he complained of and it was his day. It was his birthday 05/22. A kind of a milestone in itself. A general midlife is what they say. Was this illness on this birthday a midlife crisis synonym? No way can do!
Sam and Anin got in a surprise dinner for Friday, surprise Tiramisu cake for Esh, which he cut at 12:00 midnight, the start of his day. It was very sweet of Anin and
Sam, very thoughtful to bring in the surprise candles too that said "eshu re" to put on the cake. :) A nick that I call for esh. The dinner - chili paneer curry and sprouts spinach daal that Anin cooked was yum m.
Tanay kept all our birthday eve shopping of balloons and his choice of 'red rose with gerbera' bouquet a secret and he slept with it. He was sleeping at 12:00 when dad cut bday cake.
The next morning when he woke up after everyone, I asked him in his ear
"Remember the bday? today is papa's birthday".
He jumped on his feet and wished Esh "Happy birthday papa". He took papa's hand and walked him to dining area and said "Surrrpriseee" :)
Then saturday afternoon during lunch was a surprise visit by friend Sreeraj after a long time. Later in the afternoon we started playing Rummy. Sam and me tried our hands first time on the game. It sure was lot of fun. The phone calls from Mummy-nana, Mamma-papa and Deepthi-Sindhur to wish Esh for his day made him very happy and feel special. The entire day was happy inspite of birthday boy not in his pink of health.
We went to California Pizza kitchen for dinner only to find closed for the day. The hungry tummies made us stop at Friendly's on the way and eat some not very interesting grub there. But it was the awesome ice-creams at Friendly's that ended the day. The bittersweet day started with eating Tiramisu cake and ended with an ice-cream - a complete satisfaction for the sweet tooth. Happy birthday to you Esh! Love ya.

Chedd'r peppers and mozzarella sticks
I am so thankful to God and at the same time glad that Esh finally is feeling better and was back to his form yesterday. It was his turn to be under the weather which lasted three days. For those days he did not step out of the door, not even to check the mails. Tanay and I missed him in his usual self. At the same time I made sure that Tanay doesn't miss on his parent time. I cooked in the mornings everyday and hit two birds with a stone(not that I want to kill a bird he-he). Esh got to eat hot food everyday and evenings were spent with Tanay. Sunday I took Tanay to 'How to train my dragon', 3-D version and he loved it. After that almost everyday I became his 'Nightfury' and he was 'Hiccup'. He loved the dragon rides and pretend plays of flying high in the sky. Later that day we went to library and spent the rest of the afternoon reading books together.
Finally when Esh was himself that evening we planned to just drive out. It was rainy, little cold. Esh donned his puffed jacket. I had removed shoes for Tanay as soon as we came from his school but esh's determination to step out made me tie them back. We all were happy. The weather tempted us to drive in to Sonic and we enjoyed our fried tots(Chedd'r peppers and mozzarella sticks). Tanay loved his mozzarella sticks. While we ate in the car, we left our car headlights on. As we finished gobbling down that greasy stuff and decided to move- the car wouldnt start. The battery juice was getting over as we emptied the ocean limeade juice from the cup. Then Esh looked at me. I could see Esh's eyes gleaming with pride over the decision he took to own battery charger. We juiced our battery up with the charger. And went on a long drive, filled up the gas and got back home. Ready for the next day, satisfied - refreshed!

Car song
On the other night I hauled Tanay to his room during his bedtime. Often he knows that he is tired and he should sleep but denies it so his train of fun keeps chugging. He says he doesn't like nights and that he likes only daytime. That is because all the fun is soon about to get over. Don't we on a Sunday afternoon? We often say...oh the weekend is over though we have few hours left.
oh well! Now we all were very tired after the birthday party and treading the paved streets of sesame with few rides here and there. I presumed that Tanay would snooze soon and decided to skip the story reading and sing a lullaby. Its been long that he slept to a song! It used to be "Chanda Re", so I started humming it for him and he said: "No not that one-I want the car song" and started bobbing his head. He somehow prematurely discovered the songs of "Rock On" when swapping songs on the cd player in the car. Now when in car for comparatively longer runs, he asks us to put 'Rock On' in Mommy's car. Same story for MJ's thriller in Esh's Infiniti. He has joined the head nodding society too soon for his age. And in the bedtime those ridiculous nods for the 'car song' will sure not help him catch the Zs. Somehow I managed to read "Papa-Please Get The Moon For Me" and "Yertle the Turtle". Believe me, the turtle was making me fall asleep. Tanay's peepers went red but he would shut them off. He was in daze but not ready to sleep. He wanted me to read a third book. I figured the problem, turned off the bed side light.I repeated 10 times the last two lines from "Yertle the turtle" and held his hands tight under the covers. Esh and I both think holding his limbs gives him a kind of assurance, helps him feel safe to ease off into dreamland. And Finally he was asleep. Phew!

Phew!

Sorry
Today I was in hurry as Tanay had soccer class in the morning, and so we made sure he makes it to his school by 9:00 AM. I decided to pack his lunch bag later and drop it later. Since my mind has been super-occupied with overloaded work in office, the fact that Tanay did not have his lunch with him got completely washed off my mind. Then I got a call from Ms Lucia at around 11:50 AM about his lunch. I rushed to his school and saw Tanay sitting in woeful state. His body language telling me "why did mommy forget my lunch? and I dont have anything to eat during my lunch hour and I am really really sad". The first thing I said to him as soon as I saw him was
"Sorry. See mommy got your lunch."
"What did you get?"
"Here."
"Did you get any curry?"
"Yes"
"Oh ok :)"
Silence.
"Its hot"
"No its not, its just warm, you silly"
And then one piece went in his mouth.
"Sorry. See mommy got your lunch."
"What did you get?"
"Here."
"Did you get any curry?"
"Yes"
"Oh ok :)"
Silence.
"Its hot"
"No its not, its just warm, you silly"
And then one piece went in his mouth.

Newest Emotion: Blushing and Jealousy
This time when Sam and Anin visited us in Piscataway NJ we saw two new emotions showing up on Tanay.Tanay blushed every time AniMami hugged tanay or looked at him, so much to that he went hiding behind me when AniMami said I will miss you Tanay when saying bye. He has never done that. Then we saw the jealousy in him when SamMama and AninMami were playing word game on their iphone, so much to that he started crying and said that he also wants to play with AniMami. When AniMami and SamMama went for a classical Musical get together on saturday night, Tanay would have asked me at least 15 times where is AniMami and when is she coming- and not a word on SamMama. He sure is getting fond of AniMami
